Last year the Las Vegas Bowl featured the outstanding play of Cal and BYU. The game was the first bowl appearance for BYU in four years and was marked by a bowl-record crowd of the over forty thousand fans at the game. The play on the field was just as impressive as the attendance record for the game as Cal went entered the final quarter of the game with a commanding 21-point lead. BYU never game up hope as quarterback John Beck responded with two scoring passes that cut Cal’s lead to only seven points with less than six minutes to play.

The Bears, in an attempt to seal the game tried but missed a 50-yard field goal that gave BYU the ball back with 2:20 to go on the game clock. BYU and Beck seemed to be in rhythm and had begun to move down field when disaster struck in an errant pass that was intercepted by Daymeion Hughes. Cal was able to then hold on and win its second bowl game in three postseason trips behind coach Jeff Tedford. A bright spot for BYU was that their quarterback, Beck set a Pioneer PureVision Las Vegas Bowl record by going 35-for-53 on his way to 352 yards of offence with three touchdowns.

Named for Las Vegas gaming guru Sam Boyd, the Sam Boyd Stadium has hosted the Las Vegas Bowl at the 40,000 seat stadium since 1992. The game has featured some great teams in recent years including a Toledo versus Nevada game that went to the wire and needed over-time to decide the outcome of the game. Toledo was able to prevail and win by a margin of three points in that historic game. This years game will feature the second selection from the Mountain West Conference against the fifth selection from the Pac-10 Conference.
